Dr. Large the pick in the Kent Stakes this Saturday
Fox Hill Farm’s Dr. Large is my pick in the $250,000 (including $50,000 Breeders’ Cup fund) Grade II Kent Stakes at Delaware Park this Saturday. The son A.P. Indy will be facing six rivals including the likely heavy favorite Laureate Conductor in the mile and an eighth turf test for 3-year-olds.
Yes, Dr. Large will be facing the toughest set of foes he has ever met in his ten career starts, but the Kentucky-bred trained by J. Larry Jones has relished the switch to the grass which occurred three starts back. On June 8, he ran second in a mile turf allowance at Delaware Park. He followed by posting a 2-length triumph against older foes going a mile and a sixteenth over the Delaware lawn on July 12. In his most recent outing, he won the one mile $75,000 Capital City Stakes over a heavy yielding turf at Penn National on August 1. You will get some value on him and nay horse conditioned by J. Larry Jones is capable of posting an upset victory.
Another to keep a close eye on is Rutledge Farm’s Colonel Rutledge. He is stepping up as well, but he has been ultra consistent, he is unbeaten on the turf, he runs well on any surface and he hails from the barn of H. Graham Motion.
The one to beat in this heat is Laureate Conductor who recently ran third in the Grade I Secretariat Stakes at Arlington Park. The son of Bernstein trained by Christophe Clement sports a record of two wins, two seconds and a third from six starts.
