Horse of the Year contender Havre de Grace works at Delaware Park in preparation for this Saturday’s Beldame Stakes
Horse of the Year contender Havre de Grace worked five furlongs in 1:02 1/5 over a fast main track at Delaware Park this morning in preparation for her engagement in the Grade I Beldame Invitational at Belmont Park this Saturday. The 4-year-old daughter of Saint Liam has been stabled at Delaware Park since the beginning of the meet and she is owned by Wilmington, Delaware native Richard Porter’s Fox Hill Farm.
“All is well,” said trainer J. Larry Jones. “She started off slow, but she finished up real good. She came home running well enough and we are where we want to be. When she got back to the barn, she acted like it was a routine gallop instead of a breeze. But believe me she is fit off of that Saratoga race. We are ready.”
In her most recent, the Kentucky-bred conditioned by J. Larry Jones became only the second filly to win the Grade I Woodward Stakes when she notched a 1 ¼-length victory in the mile and an eighth affair at Saratoga on September 3rd. Previously, she was defeated by a nose by her rival Blind Luck in the mile and a quarter Grade II Delaware Handicap on July 17th. She sports a career record of seven wins, four seconds and two thirds from 13 starts with earnings of $1,986,175.
After the Beldame, she will be pointed toward the Breeders’ Cup at Churchill Downs where she will run in either the Ladies Classic on November 4th or the Classic on November 5th.
