Ron Turcotte Day at Delaware Park this Saturday; Secretariat’s jockey will sign autographs in Grove Tent from 2pm-5:30pm
Ron Turcotte, the jockey who rode super horse Secretariat to Triple Crown glory, will be signing autographs at Delaware Park this Saturday.
The Ron Turcotte Day autograph session, which is presented by Delaware Park and the Delaware Certified Thoroughbred Program, will be held from 2:00pm to 5:30pm in the Grove Tent.
In 1973, Turcotte became famous when he rode Secretariat to the first Triple Crown in 25 years. In addition to being Secretariat’s primary rider, he also rode Northern Dancer, Tom Rolfe, Arts and Letters, Fort Marcy, Shuvee, Dark Mirage, and Riva Ridge. At Delaware Park, the Hall of Famer with 3,032 career victories was the leading jockey in 1964 and rode Damascus to victory in the Leonard Richards Stakes in 1967. Other Delaware Park stake wins for Turcotte include: Funny Fellow, the winner of the 1968 Rosemont; Beautiful Day the winner of the 1964 Rosenna and the 1965 New Castle; and Come Hither Look the winner of the 1964 Blue Hen Stakes.
On Saturday, four $75,000 Delaware Certified restricted stakes highlight the racing action. The stakes are the five and a half furlong Small Wonder for 2-year-old fillies, the five and a half furlong First State Dash for 2-year-olds, the six furlong Tax Free Shopping Distaff for fillies and mares and the six furlong New Castle for 3-year-olds and up.
A drawing for a Backstretch Tour Pass will also be conducted as part of the Ron Turcotte Day. The Tour Pass includes a tour of the Delaware Park stable area for the winner and a guest, lunch for two in the Terrace Dining Room and a Trophy Race Presentation. Entries are currently being taken through 3:00pm on Saturday. Entry forms are available at the program stand. Deposit completed entries into the drum located on the first floor of the Track Clubhouse. Three winners will be selected immediately after the sixth race on Saturday.
