Summer Laugh tops Blue Hen Stakes
Edward P. Evans’ Summer Laugh tops a field of six entered in the $75,000 Blue Hen Stakes at Delaware Park this Saturday. This is the 37th renewal of the mile and a sixteenth event for 2-year-old fillies.
In her only career start, the Virginia-bred daughter of Distorted Humor conditioned by Todd Pletcher notched a 6 ¾-length score in a six and a half furlong maiden at Saratoga on August 8.
Advantage Stable’s Ima Wild Pussycat has had three career outings, all at Monmouth Park, but her last effort was her most impressive when she recorded a 7 ¼-length victory in a mile and seventy yard maiden on August 28. Previously, the Florida-bred trained by Gregory Sacco finished fifth beaten nearly 10-lengths in a five and a half furlong maiden on August 7. In her career debut, the daughter of Congaree ran third beaten nearly 12-lengths in a five furlong maiden on July 4. In her first two career starts, she encountered some bad racing luck.
“In her first race, she was bothered by a loose horse,” said trainer Gregory Sacco. “The loose horse basically bothered her throughout the race. In her second race, she blew a shoe at the start, so her first two races were not easy. Plus, her first two races were sprinting and she is bred to run all day. In her last race, her first time stretching out, she put it all together. She had a professional performance so we are just hoping to build and work from there.”
Since the race was inaugurated in 1958, some of the greatest fillies in the history of the sport have won the race. In 1961, Hall of Famer Cicada won the five furlong race as part of her 2-year-old filly of the year campaign. In 1967, Obeah, a two time winner of the Delaware Handicap (1969 & 1970) and the dam of Go For Wand, won the five furlong race. More recently, Xtra Heat won the six furlong race in 2000 before compiling a record of 26 wins from 35 starts with earnings of $2,389,635. The Blue Hen, which was run as a spring of five, five and a half, or six furlongs since the inception of the race, was discontinued after 1982. The race was brought back to the stake schedule in 1996, and the distance was extended to one mile in 2001. In 2004, the distance of the Blue Hen was changed to a mile and a sixteenth.
