• Attended Garden State Park during his youth and decided to enter the industry after graduating from college.  Served apprenticeship with trainer Walter Kelly at Aqueduct from 1971-1973.  Started his own stable in 1974.

•In 2010, he won his record-tying fourth Delaware Handicap with Life At Ten. His previous Delaware Handicap winners are Unbridled Belle (2007), Fleet Indian (2006) and Irving’s Baby (2001). The record is held by Henry Clark who won his four Delaware Handicap Endine (1958 & 1959) and Obeah (1969 & 1970) who were both locally-owned by Christiana Stables. • In 2006, became first trainer to win the Delaware Oaks (Adieu) and the Delaware Handicap (Fleet Indian) in the same year.
• Worked under trainer D. Wayne Lukas for seven years before opening his own public stable with seven horses in December 1995 at Hialeah.
• Notched first career victory with Majestic Number at Gulfstream Park in 1996.

• Elected to the National Racing Hall of Fame in 1990.
• Trained Storm Cat to victory in the Gr. I Young America at the Meadowlands in 1985.
• He is the all-time leading steeplechase trainer by money won.
• Sheppard arrived in the United States in 1961 by way of Eton College and the British Stock Exchange.
• One of the first people he met was legendary steeplechase trainer Burley Cocks. For the next nine months, Sheppard worked at Cocks' farm in Unionville, Pa. After a brief return to England, Sheppard spent the next two years riding races for Cocks, and estimates that he won on about 10% of 250 rides.

• Sheppard then turned to training and soon had a string of six horses.
• First winner as a trainer was Haffaday at the Rosetree Hunt Meeting in 1966.
• One of his first clients was George Strawbridge Jr., owner of Augustin Stable, and one of steeplechasing's most successful owners.
